Interview With The Carrier

Posted in Interviews on October 28, 2008 by unlimitednights

This is something else I wanted to put in Issue 3 but since I have been getting a good amount of readers, heres something new.

Who are you and what do you do?

Yo what’s up, my names anthony I’m from the carrier I do vocals.

Lets not waste time, tell me about the best show you’ve ever played, you know, best fuckin’ crowd?

Best fuckin’ crowd’s definitely gotta be Johnson City, we played there three times this summer and every single time was fucking off the hook, those dudes down there are the best dudes on the planet. Everyone comes out to the shows and its always tons fun, everyone goes crazy and its always nuts.

When did you get into hardcore and why are you still into it?

I got into hardcore maybe the end of my freshman year of high school, I had a dude who was into underground music and hardcore and shit, and he got me into it, and I just loved the vibes and the people the went along with it. It was a positive thing for me to get into, and I stay in it because I love the music and I love the people, anyone who contributes to the scene are always the best people in the world.

How do you feel about the band Limp Wrist?

Limp Wrist, I don’t know much about them but I know one of my buddies really loves them. Props to them because everywhere I go I hear about them, wasn’t their singer really flamboyantly gay? (yeah) Ah! Thats awesome, I back that, I back homosexuality, I’m not gay but I don’t think anyone should discriminate against homosexuality, because you can love someone else from the same sex, I don’t think thats wrong.

Speaking of that talk about the stereotypes in hardcore, the minorities, the few black kids, the gay kids, the straight edge kids…

There’s a lot of stereotypes in hardcore, even if you go to a show and there’s a dude wearing a multi-coloured hoodie that zips all the way up to his fuckin’ skull, like its all stereo types, I mean, you’d think in a scene thats so small that there wouldn’t be as many stereotypes, but you know anyone can go to a show and you see a dude that doesn’t look like he fits in but I mean he’s there for the same reason that everyone else is, I mean everyones there for the music, everyones there for the vibes, everyones there for the love of it you know? So I don’t think there should be any stereotypes in hardcore… even though there are. There definitely are, there is no denying that.

What’s the worst thing about hardcore right now?

Well one thing is the gas prices, but that has nothing to do with hardcore… it seems like its trendy to be into hardcore these days, I wish it WAS trendy, because then I’d have some money, because right now I have no money. We’ve been on tour for I think, by the end of the summer when we all get back to the real world and society, we will have been on tour for nine and a half weeks and none of us have any money now. But like I said its all for the love of the music, the worst thing about hardcore, is that it seems like its a trend, you know? Some bands will play and like 200 kids will be there, and another band will play and there will be like 8 or 9 kids there. And its cool that you want to support hardcore but you should support all touring bands because touring is not cheap or free.

What’s the best thing about hardcore?

The best thing about hardcore is the music, and the dudes and everything involved in it, I mean everyone has been to a show where there was an awesome vibe, awesome music, and awesome people. Like tonight, tonights been awesome, tonight has been one of the best shows we have played on tour,  and I mean, one show like this will make up for 10 shows that sucked, you know? Thats just the way it works.

Any last words?

Last words? Big up to The Bonus Army, just signed a record deal with Rock Vegas Records, best band out of Boston, Mass. So just keep going to shows, supporting your scene, gas ain’t cheap so buy some merch if you can afford it, if you can’t, give ‘em a few bucks we understand if you cant give us anymore money.

You mean the best band besides On Broken Wings?

No, The Bonus Army is the best band period, they have a new cd coming out on Rock Vegas which should be out late 2008-2009. Make sure to check that shit out.

Tonight

Posted in Uncategorized on October 26, 2008 by unlimitednights

Tonight on Equalizing Distort, Bored Stiff played their set. Put as simply as possible, this band is fucking good. As I am listening to it, I can’t help but think about how when D’Arcy told me to listen to their first demo, I was so bummed out on it sounding so bad. I am going to put that all on the overall poor quality recording because this band is obviously talented as fuck, and has the song writing skills to back it up. This band really reminds me of Trash Talk, with more of youth attitude, with REAL anger, with frustration, coming from kids who aren’t 25 years old. It is funny to hear the little mess ups in chord changes, and know that these dudes don’t give a fuck that it happened because they are playing their own music for their own reasons. But seriously, the sound is really reminiscent of Trash Talk, (at this point the words “Your God is a lie” is being shouted repeatedly). This band is fast, angry and has some really good mosh parts. I haven’t been around when they have played a show yet, but I am sure they are full of energy, and I am sure D’Arcy jumps around a lot.

I stand confident that Suffocation by Figure Four is one of the best hardcore songs ever written, ever.

Bands Losing Their Edge

Posted in Uncategorized on October 23, 2008 by unlimitednights

This has nothing to do with bands dropping the straight edge. It is taking the term how it should be, when bands stop being edgy, stop being originial and become boring. This has all come with me downloading the first Attack In Black ep, if you lived around southern Ontario when this band started playing, chances are you have seen them atleast once, if not a few times. They used to play a unique variation of punk, fast but still with good rhythm and melody, but they slowly made the transition into this folk rock band who now refuses to play Black Flag covers anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not wasting on Attack In Black, the band is amazing and I still like their music a lot, I am just saying, its such a bummer change. Another good example of this is No Warning, I mean after the whole Sum 41 thing they had just turned into another heavier version of Sum 41. One of the hardest bands to ever come out of Canada had suddenly lost that undisputed title, now again, that album isn’t all bad, there are some pretty heavy parts on it, but I think you will understand the overall outline of what I mean. I understand that a lot of bands want to make progress in their writing and music styles, but it just sucks as a fan when the change goes so badly and they lose what they once held onto so tightly. I have no way to conclude all my thoughts here..

Issue 2 of the zine is out, but I won’t be handing it out for a little while, because I am broke beyond belief.

Long Days

Battery – Until The End

Posted in Uncategorized on October 20, 2008 by unlimitednights

This record is over 10 years old, and one of my favourite records of all time. I cannot say enough good things about this record, it is full of straight edge pride, it has substance in the writing and the music just makes you want to party. With an overall “clean” sound guitar wise, its the vocals and the lyrics on this album that really make the difference. This is the most perfect album for a straight edge kid in high school, lyrics that you can relate do, about jocks and dickheads. This is straight edge pride at its best, its not about beating kids up who arent straight, and its not about how everyone else should be straight edge. It has a lot to do with being a good person and keeping true to yourself and your friends. This is probably the best display of the pure talent coming from one of the 90’s most talented straight edge bands. It is not too fast, and its not too slow, but it is just at that right pace that gets you really stoked and doesn’t leave you feeling bored. Check this band and album out. Sorry for being a retard and not being able to write sometimes. Oh, and this album has a cover of Young ’til I Die on it… jus sayin’, its really fucking good.

MTV gets deservingly Fucked Up….again

Posted in Uncategorized on October 14, 2008 by unlimitednights

SO! MTV Live asked Fucked Up to play again, this came as a huge surprise to everyone seeing as last time the band played they caused a reported $2000+ in damage. When everyone arrived, they were surprised as to how Fucked Up was about to play the set. Obviously to have a less cared about area get annhialated when the band starts playing. The band plays the first note, and as at ANY Fucked Up show, shit goes wild, things start getting broken, obvious chaos has broken out. Without any sort of surprise the band is cut short after 1 song, the walls are covered in spray paint, a motorcycle is spewing gas and mirrors have been thrown. All and all this is quite obviously a pathetic attempt by MTV to look legitimate, to try and play the cool kid. They don’t care that things are going to get all busted up, they are going to encourage it. Idiots.

Go talk about it.

Breaking Point

Posted in Uncategorized on October 9, 2008 by unlimitednights

If you were to take a big stick, and bend it, put it under great pressure until it snapped. Well, after it breaks you are left with another stick that is solid but not as it should be on the broken side. I am one of aforementioned broken, I lost it this weekend but I have since calmed down, I am home, I am going to some shows this weekend, especially tonight, I am going to let out alot of frustration and energy. I don’t think I was ready for college yet, I like it, I really do, its fun, I like what I’m learning I was just not prepared for the social aspect of it. I like commas if you didn’t notice.

Hardcore and Politics

Posted in Life on October 6, 2008 by unlimitednights

In the most stereotypical way, these two do not mesh well together, the punks are notoriously supportive of anarchy. On October 14th the election will be held, and more and more every year, as we grow older, as we teenagers grow up and have more to offer the world. For the time being, we are still youth and we are still looked down upon somewhat, as socially and overall irresponsible. Being said, I think it is important for us to show initiative, show that you care, even if you don’t care. If you want to make a small but important statement, register to vote, show up and mark down a vote for every candidate, this will show that as a youth you have enough time, initiative and focus to come out and vote, but you just don’t give a fuck who wins or loses. On the other hand, if you do care about the political happenings in your country, vote your heart out, vote for the candidate you feel deserves it the most, make a choice you feel will do something progressive for the country and benefit the youth. Being 17, I cannot vote, but please to anyone who is old enough, go vote and do something about this all. I won’t tell you who to vote for, but go and make it happen.

Don’t vote Conservative…
